The Mill Hill Missionaries
were founded by Cardinal Herbert Vaughan in 1866 to
provide spiritual care for the newly founded colonies
of the British Empire. Their motto 'Amare Et Servire'
means 'to love and to serve.'
Mission
To go to the
un-evangelised areas and establish a local church -
then move on.
Kilkenny
The Mill Hill
Missionaries came to Ossory and founded a Junior Seminary
in Freshford in 1932. The first students were admitted
in September 1932 and the college provided secondary
school education until 1989. Its primary purpose
was the formation of students for the missionary priesthood.
Due to lack of vocations the Mill Hill Missionaries
were forced to close the school and dispose of the property.
They moved to Kilkenny
in 1989 where they continue to be a missionary presence
and fulfill a pastoral role in the diocese. The house
on the Waterford Road (formerly the Sisters of Charity),
is a centre for the promotion of mission awareness.
Primary in this work
is the regular contact with the friends and benefactors
of Mill Hill through the publication four times a year
of the Advocate magazine
and the many letters that are sent to our promoters
and benefactors. Parish Promotion is a very important
part of the apostolate of the Missionaries and a means
of keeping in regular contact with both the clergy and
the laity.
