Kevin O
Donovan was born in Drimoleague, Co Cork, Ireland on
23rd of October 1947 into a family of five children.
He had two brothers and two sisters. He went to Freshford,
Co. Kilkenny for his Secondary Education. He studied
philosophy in Dartry, Dublin and obtained a BA. at UCD.
He went to Mill Hill, London for the study of theology.
He was ordained priest in Kinsale by Bishop Lucy on
17th June 1972.
After his
ordination he was appointed to Miri Diocese. In 1982
Kevin went home on sick leave after developing TB. He
took up vocations and formation ministry in the Irish
Region in 1982, based in Dartry. In 1989 Kevin received
an appointment to work in East Africa and began the
new formation programme in Luanda, Kenya. In 1998 he
was appointed to Kroonstad Diocese and was Team Leader
in the new outreach programme in South Africa. In 2000
Kevin returned to Ireland and in late 2001 became aware
that he had very serious cancer.
He spent
many months undergoing various cancer treatments. During
the last days he was in some pain and was restless.
Kevin died peacefully in a Dublin hospice, surrounded
by his family and is buried in his home parish in Cork.
